Urine Powered Batteries

I do not doubt that you read the title once, questioned what you read, and read it again. No, you have not stepped into a parallel universe, where bodily waste is readily used as a power source. This technology actually was discovered a couple years ago in the biomedical field. It’s purpose? To power a credit-card sized biochip that measures certain chemicals in the urine. Apparently, there is a certain enzyme that is universal in every human’s urine that serves as a power source. However, this technology was created for the purpose of finding the abnormalities in the urine for specific diseases such as Diabetes.
By this point, I hope that you have been thoroughly convinced that you are still in the 21st century. New power sources are being discovered every day, and they can be derived from some pretty odd sources. Not too long ago, we would have laughed at the thought of using corn oil to power diesel engines. Now, let me make this clear. There is no way that there will ever be a urine powered battery in an 18 wheeler; nor a motorcycle for that matter. Urine generates a very low increment of power; about 1.5 volts. The closest power source you can compare it to would be a AA battery. However, this technology can be used in devices such as cell phones, PDA’s, and MP3 players. Although there has only been talk about this application of the urine powered battery, it is only a matter of time before one is put out on the market. Can you imagine? Your cell phone is about to die and you are in dire need to use it. What if it was just as easy as pulling the battery out, and taking it to the restroom.
