Intel's Smallest CPU - Intel Atom Processor
Joseph Lopez
Friday, August 01, 2008
Intel Corporation is attacking the rapid growing low-voltage processor market with their all-new Atom Processor. This CPU is intended to provide all the mobile internet devices (MIDs) and ultra-mobile PCs with respectable performance while operating on very little power. The goal was to manufacture a widely adopted processor that could preserve battery life and still deliver basic performance without sacrificing space or power efficiency. Now that over half of the new ultra-mobile PCs come equipped with an Intel Atom processor, it looks like they hit their mark.
Newly designed from the ground up, 45nm² Intel® Atom™ processors pack an astounding 47 million transistors on a single chip measuring less than 26mm², making them Intel's smallest and lowest power processors. All this while delivering the power and performance you need for full Internet capabilities.
-Get a new range of power-efficient devices
with excellent performance enabled by all new hafnium-infused 45nm² high-k silicon technology.
-Increase energy efficiency
in smaller more compact designs with a thermal design power specification ranging from less than 1W to 2.5 watts for mobile devices.
-Extend battery life
in select devices with an incredibly low idle and average power allowing the device to stay powered on while also conserving energy.
According to the Super PI test result, the Atom at 1.6GHz is a little bit faster than the old Intel Pentium III-M “Tualatin” at 1.13GHz, but slower than the laptop-use Intel Celeron M “Dothan-512? at 900MHz, utilized in the Asus Eee PC. However, Super PI is a single-threaded application, while the “Silverthorne” CPUs incorporate HyperThreading technology for improved performance of multi-threaded software.
Based on an entirely new microarchitecture, the Intel® Atom™ processor was developed specifically for targeted performance and low power while maintaining full Intel® Core™ microarchitecture instruction set compatibility. Intel® Atom™ processors also feature multiple threads for better performance and increased system responsiveness.
