Cocktails to Extend Your Batteries
Denise F
Tuesday, October 02, 2007
All this talk buzzing around about a “cocktail” based battery (i.e. ethanol powered batteries); makes you wonder if scientists came up with this idea while sipping their favorite brew at their local pub. Alcoholic beverages are now being used for something other than inebriation? What is the world coming to? How can a perfectly good beverage be wasted on something other that the pursuit of intoxication?
What about cocktails that can power up YOUR inner battery?
Can’t the formula be reversed?
In a world of bigger, faster, and better; people work hard, and play even harder. Club goers, party hoppers, and those nocturnal souls out there are looking for ways to extend their will to party. After all, there is too much fun to be had!
Energy drinks have given the night scene a whole new life. With the constant desire to live it up and make it last, those looking to recharge their inner battery have turned to energy drinks for that extra kick. A new breed of high powered cocktails has recently dominated the night scene and started its invasion of the mainstream.
Since the original introduction of your favorite Vodka mixed with that crimson bull (you know- the one in the silver and blue can); concoctions of energy drink based cocktails have gotten more diverse. Appealing to more than just the rush that is felt after consumption, these more advanced hybrids tempt the taste buds as well.
Not to mention the snazzy names companies have come up with to appeal to the masses of social drinkers. With names such as Cocaine®, Monster®, NOS®, Rock Star®, Battery®, Crunk®, and Jet Set® … who can party on without one? These catchy and well geared names have turned the energy drink business into a $3.2 billion dollar industry according to the recent Mintel report (April, 25, 2007: www.mintel.com).
So what’s actually IN these high revved party pleasers
that keep you coming back for more?
Your basic energy drink is made up of water, caffeine,
sugar, vitamins (like B-Complex), taurine (a cousin of the
amino-acid), and finally some sort of flavoring.
While energy drinks depend highly on their caffeine content, the combinations of all ingredients are sure to put pep in your step. Add your favorite shot, maybe even a mixer and you have yourself one Molotov cocktail (no pun intended!).
So why mix this liquid battery into your favorite tequila, vodka, or cognac? Simple, the rush of sugars and caffeine in your body lightly offsets the effects of the alcohol, and masks your intoxication- Giving you the feeling that can be compared to a burst of energy. This let’s you wake up and prepare yourself for the next round. Companies such as Stolichnaya®, Jagermeister®, and Skyy® have caught on to the trend and made their beverages the key ingredient to signature blends of these energy drinks.
In the true spirit of a once avid party go’er, I have included a few recipes to some of my favorite fusions. All of these recipes were introduced or recommended to me by my favorite bartender, my brother, Joe. I must say, to date, he has not been wrong! With these recipes at your fingertips you can either amaze your friends with your knowledge of delicious recharging cocktails, or put your hangout’s bartender to the test!
The Lemon Drop Fusion
(by far my favorite- Thanks Joe!)
2oz. Ketel One® Citroen Vodka
1oz. Triple Sec®
3 splashes lemon juice
1/2 oz. Red Bull®
21/2oz. lemonade with pulp
1oz. orange juice with pulp
Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a glass. Garnish with lemon slices.
Cherry Bomb Extreme
2oz. Jagermeister® liqueur
4oz. Blue Ox® black cherry energy drink
1 tbsp grenadine syrup
Stir & Serve
Green Spade
8oz can Red Bull® energy drink
6oz. UV® blue raspberry vodka
4oz. chilled lemonade
Stir & Serve w/lemon garnish
Life is Good
1oz. Stoli® Raspberry vodka
5oz. Sprite® soda
1 splash cranberry juice
1 splash Red Bull® energy drink
Garnish with lime
Crunk Juice
(can be made for the masses!)
3 parts Crunk
1 part Hennessy®
1 part SKYY®
1 part Raw Dog®
2 parts grapefruit juice
Pour all ingredients into a pitcher, stir slightly and serve over ice.
*** Best served in a Pimp Cup***
Now this next one is a formula by “The Maestro”; award winning bartender, Salvatore Calabrese. It doesn’t contain caffeine, so those who are sensitive to the effects can still enjoy a “pick me up” from the bourbon and the Brenca Menth mixture.
Bourbon Pick Me Up
3oz top Makers Mark® bourbon
3oz. Branca Menth®
3oz. fresh lemon juice
Sprig fresh mint
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice.
Shake. Strain, pour into a glass and garnish
with a sprig of mint.
Now, the responsible adult in me must warn you…
studies have shown that the combination of high rev energy drinks and alcohol are not necessarily best for the old ticker. And of course, there is always the reminder not to drink and drive.
Since some of these tempting drinks like the Red Apple Martini and The Starburst are not so easily turned from, here are a few tips on how to keep your good time from going sour:
*Hydrate yourself regularly-
Drink water before you go out and in between drinks. Make sure to drink lots more once your night on the town is over. Hydrating your self regularly helps prevent that regrettable hang over!
*Eat before indulging-
Enjoy a meal! Carbohydrates and fats slow down your bloodstreams absorption of alcohol. Sugary foods help, also, since alcohol breaks down the sugar in your liver.
*Moderate Yourself-
Umm, maybe this isn’t the easiest one, but it works!
Finally, if you can’t so any of the above-
The failsafe is a designated driver (yes, a cab counts!).
Just remember the key to living a full life is fully living it. Enjoy good times, and drink responsibly!
