Added Features on Nintendo 3DS Take Toll on Battery Life

It’s a fairly simple concept- Adding more features to a particular device increases the amount of energy required to properly function. And it’s exactly why the Nintendo 3DS is facing questions about its battery life as it comes closer to the February 26, 2011 launch date.

In a recent Conference Q&A with Nintendo investors, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata talked about the Nintendo 3DS battery having a shorter lifespan than the standard Nintendo DS battery-

As for the battery, it is inevitable that Nintendo 3DS will be a device which requires more frequent recharging than Nintendo DS. This is why we are going to include the cradle, which is a dedicated battery charger. Perhaps we may need to dispatch to our consumers a message, something like, “Please place your Nintendo 3DS on the cradle as soon as you return home with it. -Satoru Iwata (President)-

Yes, a glasses-free 3D display up top, a wireless “tag mode,” and automatic wireless updates to the 3DS are nice additions. But are they worth all that you’ll sacrifice in battery life?

Only time will tell……
