intel-logo2Forget 3, 4, or even 5 day battery life for cellular phones. If Intel delivers on a new promise, it could mean as much as ten days of standby on smartphones, as well as two days of audio playback.

As noted by xIntelecom, An Atom-based platform, known as ‘Moorestown’, has been announced by the firm, promising to significantly reduce power usage in idle modes, for audio and for rich multimedia situations.

“Through ‘Moorestown’, Intel is scaling the benefits of Intel Architecture while significantly reducing the power, cost and footprint to better address handheld market segments. As a result of our efforts, the Intel Atom processor is pushing the boundaries of higher performance at significantly lower power to show what’s possible as handheld devices become small, powerful mobile computers.”
-Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and general manager of the Ultra Mobility Group at Intel.

The new processor is expected to find its way into mobile phones commercially available in the UK by the second half of 2010.
