RCA Magic: Charging a Battery Out of Thin Air

[ 0 ] January 11, 2010 |

You never know what will be unveiled next at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and the 2010 version was no exception. Of particular note is the new and potentially revolutionary Airnergy Harvesting Battery Charger being released sometime soon by RCA. In short, it’s a battery charger that manages to harvest energy just from picking up on Wi-Fi signals, making it wireless and qualifying it as a product that can truly be called ‘green’.

So how long will it take the Airnergy Harvesting Battery Charger to charge a standard smartphone battery out of thin-air? Probably not as long as one might think. A demonstration at CES recharged a Blackberry from 30% to 100% in 90 minutes just by taking advantage of the power from a Wi-Fi signal. Not bad for a gadget that’s being released in the pocket-friendly $40 range, with a release date slated for sometime this summer.
