Beginning  May 19, the nation’s fifth-largest wireless carrier will begin replacing it’s customers dead or dying batteries with a a fully-charged replacement for no cost. Chicago-based U.S. Cellular announced the Battery Swap program just about a week ago and will be the first and only wireless carrier in the United States to offer such a service.

“Our Battery Swap program is perfect for people who depend on their wireless devices as their lifelines, such as business people, parents, not to mention heavy users who drain their battery daily,” said Jay Ellison, executive vice president and COO of U.S. Cellular. “We’re offering this service to help our customers stay connected,” he continued.

While U.S. Cellular is still somewhat limited as far as their coverage and inventory of smartphones are concerned, this new initiative serves as a way to set themselves apart from their wireless carrier competitors. “This simple gesture is just another way for us to give our customers that added peace of mind that their phone will always be there for them in case of an emergency,” Ellison added.

It’s important to note that only phones which have been purchased within the last 18 months are eligible for the U.S. Cellular Battery Swap program.
