Dell Updates Battery Replacement Program

[ 0 ] March 10, 2009 |

dellDue to additional information PC manufacturer Dell has received from Sony, the company’s lithium-ion battery supplier, they will be updating their battery-replacement program. Although fewer than 300 units manufactured by Sony have been affected worldwide, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Dell, among other system manufacturers, has been listed to have certain notebook batteries recalled.  Sony claims that the 300 batteries could possibly strike a fire and burn hazard. On Nov. 9, 2004 and April 11, 2005, the battery packs were manufactured, and then shipped by Sony shortly thereafter; either as service replacements, or with Latitude and Inspiron laptop systems.

However, since the company’s 2006 recall of the lithium-ion batteries, Sony has expanded the potential number of affected units to approximately 15,000. Dell has revised the existing recall website, and addressed both issues. Dell requests customers with these affected model to revisit the site, regardless if their battery was tabbed as part of the original recall. Dell will voluntarily replace the affected batteries, and with no further costs to the customer.

This recall is not expected to have a material adverse affect on Dell, it’s results of operations, financial positions, or cash flows.
